Introduction
As technology grows up, so must we. Human organisations and societies – including business organisations – must evolve increasingly faster today to keep up with the accelerating pace of change around us. A pace which is set and driven by tremendous and continuing developments in our knowledge, science and technology. The changes are both exciting and challenging, even potentially scary! Because too many of us in business today with modern technology at our finger tips – slip all too easily into primitive emotions at our nerve endings!

In order to equip ourselves to manage in the context of scientific, business and technological advances, we need consciously to ensure that our relationship skills and the skills of interacting with each other keep up. We need to grow and nurture in our business the human wisdom and emotional maturity to guide our teams and our organisations profitably, responsibly, and non-destructively in this “Brave New World.”

This two-day programme offers an introduction to the language and behaviour of Emotional Intelligence and related disciplines such as NLP (neurolinguistic programming) and TA (Transactional Analysis).

Learning Objectives
On successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and define Emotional Wisdome, as distinct from IQ, rate their own current “starting point” and estimate that of others.
  • Develop a sense of personal awareness, identify and name their own emotional states as and when they happen.
  • Manage, control and choose their emotional state.
  • Identify signals (verbal and non verbal) which indicate emotional states, and change of emotional state in others.
  • Use applied skills and strategies to create empathy and to guide others’ language, behaviour and feelings, with integrity.
  • Build, sustain and repair relationships.
  • Use emotional skills and proven techniques to manage, control and rescue situations of conflict, confrontation and resistance.

Programme Content
Where does Emotional Wisdom come from? Popular theories and models; how the brain works in respect of our emotions; multiple intelligences versus IQ; introduction to the concepts of neurolinguistic programming and Transactional Analysis. The importance, meaning and impact of emotional intelligence in modern organisations.

Advanced technology plus primitive emotional reactions – recipe for disaster at all levels! Where our emotions arise; how beliefs drive behaviour; how we can choose to modify our own beliefs and offer alternative perspectives to others.

Personal awareness; identifying and naming our emotions; identifying the impact of our emotions on our behaviour and the “knock on” effect on others’ behaviour; choosing a more resourceful state; choosing more resourceful language.

Techniques for managing our emotions; a toolkit to choose from to offload “bad” feelings and unhelpful emotions, and to get into a constructive and useful frame of mind; how to do this fast when you need to.

Awareness of others; empathy not sympathy; the power of seeing and understanding – you do not have to agree of give in! Reading the clues to others’ emotional states; congruent and incongruent behaviour; valuing difference.

Guiding others’ emotions with integrity; spoken and unspoken permission; language patterns and non-verbal behaviours you can use, that really make a difference for them; managing difficult feelings and reactions in others.

Mutually effective relationships; the rewards of getting together constructively; strategies for building rapport and trust; sustaining the relationship over the medium and longer term; fixing it when things go wrong.

Integrity, respect and trust.
