Introduction
Whilst professional counselling requires in depth study and practice, everyone can benefit by applying basic counselling skills in a wide variety of situations. Perhaps helping colleagues deal with change, listening with empathy to others’ problems and issues, dealing with poor performance or acting as a sounding board for someone’s career choices.
This programme is designed to give you these basic counselling skills to help you be more effective in these situations.

On successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to:
Identify and apply the key elements of basic counselling
Actively listen without judging
Ask skilled questions that enable others to find their own answers
Use verbal and non-verbal skills to build rapport and ‘read’ signals
Elicit from others their conscious and unconscious goals
Help other move forward from indecision & personal conflict
Programme Content
The programme considers the similarities between coaching, mentoring and counselling and the different goals sought. It allows participants to investigate their own beliefs and attitudes about others and how this impacts on their behaviour. From basic listening and questioning skills the programme progresses to the skills to help others identify their issues, clarify their outcomes and resolve any internal conflicts.
