Certificate in Management Principles

The Certificate in Management Principles is the second programme in the management qualification cycle which provides a professional development and accreditation route for managers from the beginning of their careers through to Diploma level. The programme is designed to nationally recognised management standards and best practice providing experienced managers with practical tools and techniques, and allowing them to achieve an accredited qualification in as little as three months.

Who should attend?
This programme is designed for Managers with a minimum two year’s experience in the role, however, previous training is not a pre-requisite for attendance. The Certificate offers more depth to the key principles of management best practice and introduces additional skills and tools including legal aspects, project management and finance.

Objectives

  • assess their current performance against management best practice
  • demonstrate the application of principles and techniques covered by the programme in their own work situations
  • together with their line manager produce a development plan for implementation in the workplace

Programme Content

Module 1: DEVELOPING MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS

  • principles of effective management
  • self-assessment of skills/competencies
  • developing your managerial style
  • leadership – avoiding ‘power’ pitfalls, fulfilling expectations
  • duties: scope of managerial tasks, authority, responsibility

Module 2: MANAGING PEOPLE

  • characteristics of different working styles
  • developing a ‘team culture’
  • communication: what, with whom, when and how
  • monitoring and improving performance
  • delegating and allocating tasks
  • setting objectives and performance standards
  • reviewing and appraising performance
  • eliminating de-motivational factors and influencing people to give their best performance
  • using meetings to achieve business objectives
  • counselling staff with personal problems
  • building positive working relationships

Module 3: Managing performance

  • setting objectives in line with business goals
  • reviewing and improving processes, procedures
  • planning, organising, utilising resources
  • project management techniques
  • monitoring and controlling costs
  • working to a budget
  • productivity: setting targets, deadlines
  • maximising available technology
  • planning and implementing change

Module 4: MANAGING IN A LEGAL FRAMEWORK

  • employer and employee obligations under the law
  • contracts of employment
  • disciplinary issues, dismissal, redundancy, termination of employment
  • resolving grievances
  • Health and safety policies and regulations – personal liability
  • Data protection
