Certificate in Advanced Principles of Supervision/Team Leadership

The Certificate in Advanced Principles of Supervision/Team Leadership is the second programme in the supervisor/team leader qualification cycle. The programme is designed to nationally recognised standards and best practice providing experienced supervisors/team leaders with practical tools and techniques, and allowing them to achieve an accredited qualification in as little as three months.

Who should attend?

This programme is designed for Supervisors/Team Leaders with a minimum two year’s experience in the role, however, previous training is not a pre-requisite for attendance. It offers more depth to the key principles of supervision best practice and introduces additional skills and tools including legal aspects, change management, basic project management and budgeting and cost control.



Objectives

By the end of the programmes delegates will be able to:
  • assess their current performance against supervision best practice
  • demonstrate the application of principles and techniques covered by the programme in their own work situations
  • together with their line manager produce a development plan for implementation in the workplace

Programme Content

Module 1: SUPERVISOR/TEAM LEADER ROLE

  • self-analysis to identify strengths and areas for development
  • the principles of effective supervisory management
  • criteria for assessing performance of individuals and groups
  • criteria for assessing performance against business objectives
  • developing relationships within the organisation

Module 2: SUPERVISING THE JOB

  • setting and achieving objectives
  • planning, organising and making the most of resources
  • budgeting and cost control
  • managing time stealers (including contingencies)
  • productivity and targets
  • monitoring and recording work progress
  • the implications of technology on systems, procedures and output
  • solving problems and making decisions

Module 3: SUPERVISING PEOPLE AND TEAMS

  • characteristics of different working styles
  • motivating and demotivating factors
  • delegating and allocating tasks
  • coaching and training staff
  • appraising staff performance
  • running effective team briefings
  • confidentiality
  • an introduction to Employment Law
  • how effective teams work
  • identifying and using strengths in the team to build effective team working
  • dealing with difficult people and sensitive issues

Module 4: SUPERVISING CHANGE

  • understanding how change affects people
  • forecasting and preparing for change
  • planning, organising and implementing change using basic project management techniques
