Introduction
It can be tempting to assume that anyone who can perform a skill can teach that skill to someone else. But you will know this is not the case if you have ever had to learn from someone who, though an excellent performer, was an unskilled coach.
Nevertheless, a surprising number of organisations do still expect their staff to pick things up as they go along, from managers, supervisors or "buddies" who have never themselves been taught to teach.
This programme introduces those, whose jobs include a responsibility for coaching others, to the very rewarding skills needed to help others learn quickly, effectively and with enjoyment.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to:
Establish their own and other's learning styles
Define learning objectives
Assess a learner's existing skill level
Prepare and deliver effective instruction
Plan a coaching session
Deliver coaching to empower learning
Tailor delivery of coaching to match learner's style
Elicit and give feedback on performance
Review the effectiveness of coaching
Support transfer of new skills to the job
Programme Content
Starting from the point of understanding and appreciating that we all learn in different ways, participants will plan and practise coaching sessions that relate directly to their work role. They consider the difference between instructing and coaching and in particular, the different skills necessary to make both stages of learning effective. Feedback plays an important part in the programme and the exercises are designed to give participants live practice in this skill.
